Christmas Goodies

Today is a (belated) round up of the goodies Christmas has bought me (and I may have bought a couple...)  :)

Nail Art for Nubbins - a dotticure

My nails are even more nubbiny after a horror of a break!  I intend to share more on the horrible break later in the week though so for now please ignore the mishapen index finger nail and extra short nails!

I realised yesterday it was Monday today, having been off work I kinda lost track of the days!  So todays NAFN is a quickly put together dotticure, I do love my dotty nails as they are quick, effective and require minimal clean up!

I used a total of five creme polishes, my white base was OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, the green is OPI Mermaids Tears, the dusy blue is Champneys Wisteria, the darker pink is Champneys Raspberry and the bright pink is SpaRitual Magnify.

Pictures below are with topcoat.

Pastel Watermarble

Another of my draft posts which I am clearing out whilst my thumb heals and in time for the new year!

I managed to purchase the Pirates of the Caribbean OPI collection earlier in December  (still waiting on one ordered from Amazon.com to arrive from US) is it ironic that when this set was released the only polish I purchased was the silver shatter as I wasn't interested in the rest of the colours.  Now I'm the reverse, not interested in the silver shatter, just the creme-y finish of the polishes!

I used a couple of the Pirates polishes here: Sparrow me the Drama, Steady as She Rose and Planks a Lot along with Can't Find my Czech-book.

Saturday, 28 December 2013

This post is a slightly older post which has been in my drafts a wee while:  I had a horrible cut on my thumb just a day or two before Christmas which got infected and left me with a thumb which is horribly swollen and sore, like a cartoon thumb when someone has just hit it with a hammer!  This has meant I can't bear to do my nails because acetone and an open wound = intense pain!  Time to clear my draft posts in time for the new year :)

This was a quick mani I did a couple of weeks ago.  Three creme bases a bit of glitter and a stud.  Simples.

I used OPI Sparrow Me the Drama, Sally Hansen Commamder in Chic and SpaRitual Delight.  The silver glitter used for the gradient is a-england Merlin.  The stud was one I purchased from Winterberry nail art on Etsy.

KIKO 402

I recently picked up Kiko 402 in a blog sale.  I already have 401 which is a firm favourite, so snapped this one up.

The photos of this have disappointed me as the polish looks quite salmony, which it definitely isn't!  I don't tweak the colour of my photos as this normally means I look like I have skin the colour of someone who has been dead for a week, usually I get very good colour representation with my manually set DSLR and don't need to.  In this case I think the gold holo nature of the Kiko has affected the pinkness of the picture.  It is a more blue polish.

Sam at Fashion Polish has some great pictures of this (but then all her pictures are great!)

Storage Update!

I mentioned that I would be posting an update on my storage a couple of day ago, here it is!

I keep my polishes in a Helmer.  Anyone who follows my Facebook page may have recently seen a status

Problems of a nail polish addict #836: helmer snobbery, the moment of panic experienced when you realise you may have to put OPI and Rimmel polishes in the same drawer. Surely the OPI will feel violated next to (gasp) cheap polishes? Perhaps if sorted by colour the bottles wouldn't experience this type of horror at mixing!

It's Christmas!!!

No nails today as I have already done a lot of festive nails through December, just a brief message to wish anyone who is reading this a Merry Christmas and thanks for following my blog :)

I will probably be running around cooking a meal for 8 people....

Christmas Tree inspired nails (pic heavy post featuring indies)

I recently posted about the polishes I have recently purchased, when I was photographing them this idea came to mind, inspired by the Christmassy feel the colours have.

I wanted to use Puff the Magic Dragon as my feature green for the tree but have read in a Facebook group the green is bolder with "undies" so on top of my normal base of Duri Rejuvacote I used two coats of a-england St George.  As I haven't really shown St George for a long time, this was a perfect chance to photograph this lush, deep green.  St George is a one coater, but the pictures below are two coats, no top coat.

Nail Art for Nubbins, failed Christmas Jumpers

Today's nail fail is an attempt at a FairIsle design from a Christmas jumper. This is the first time I have attempted this pattern after seeing a tutorial link shared by the Nailasaurus, these were done following coewlesspolish tutorial. I used bases of Barry M Gelly and Matte nail paints, added some topcoat to avoid any colour bleed then used Matt White and a small brush to paint the design.

Pictures below have top coat.

Girly Bits Blue Eyed Beer Drinking Music Loving Lawyer

Girly Bits Blue Eyed Beer Drinking Music Loving Lawyer... how did I not wear this until now?  I bought this in early November and have looked at it and thought "must try this" many times and never done it.  Then I saw a picture on Instagram by user @overallbeauty and knew it was time to bring it out.  So I put it on top of my Helmer and still didn't wear it for two days!  But when I did... OMG!

Intense mid blue in some lights, almost navy in others, the finish with a layer of HK Girl was so glossy I was asked if they were a gel colour!

The pictures below are two coats without any top coat over a base of Duri Rejuvacote.

Ooooops, who bought all the polish?

I entered December on an unofficial "no-buy" then along came my birthday and a heap of polish... I shared my birthday goodies in a previous post, today's post has some of the late arrivals which didn't make it in time for that post and some other polishes which have miraculously appeared at the door somehow - do polish fairies actually exist ;P

Fugly Colours Dotticure

This dotticure is featuring all OPI creme polishes, a couple are fairly new additions.

The combination is so fugly, yet it works in some odd way, a dusty khaki with a bright orange and a pastel pink?  C'mon?  Really? And purple and jade and blue?!

a-england Avalon with Merlin glitter gradient

a-england Avalon is one of the "forgotten" shades in my polish stash.  I love it dearly but don't often wear it.  When I do, I find myself staring at it intently.  The last time I wore just Avalon was in the summer, I remember sitting in the passenger seat of the car with the window down and my arm on the door admiring the way my nails looked in the reflection of the wing mirror!

I used Avalon for my "then and now" nails, seeing it sitting there waiting to go back to the helmer made me sad and want to use it.  I wore it alone for a day, then to hide tip wear added a silver glitter gradient using a-england Merlin (another forgotten gem)  I think 2014 will be the year of revisiting my a-englands and making time to enjoy them again.

First up is the glitter tipped gradient.  I love the pairing of the regal purple and the silvery sparkle.

Models Own Midori Melon scented polishes

Press sample - polishes provided for review.

Models Own have teamed up with Midori to produce a set of three limited edition melon scented polishes.

When I was contacted to review these I have to admit I hadn't heard of Midori, I am not a big drinker.  I got on Google though and found some amazing sounding cocktails you can make with it.  My particular tipple of choice  on the odd occasions I do drink is white Rum and I love a Strawberry Daiquiri, so reading what a Green Demon is with a mixture of Midori, White Rum, Vodka and Lemonade sounds like it could be an interesting (if a bit powerful) fruity tasting, fresh combination.  Similarly add Tequila and have a Green Dinosaur.  Which ever way you like your Midori, please be drink aware.

Anyway, onto the polishes.  I haven't ever tried a scented polish before so I was interested to see how they smelled.  First thing I did when I received them was to open the bottle and sniff but although there was a melon-y scent, it was overwhelmingly polish like.  When I applied the polish the smell became more apparent, it was so refreshing.  The smell didn't linger too long on my nails, yet when I removed Golden Green after 24 hours wear the smell was still there.

First up is Golden Green, this is a duochrome polish which is generally golden green as the name suggests, but has a fascinating shift between bright green, gold, bronze and lilac. This is two coats no top coat.

Then and Now: July 2012

One of my very early blogposts from July 2012 was a dotticure which I branded as my favourite ever (at that time!  I've done plenty since which challenge this statement) Looking back at the pictures, the poor photos hid the glory of the combo, plus it feels very Christmassy, like wrapping paper with red and purple shimmers, so it seemed the perfect time to recreate this.

I stuck to the same polishes as the original (second from last photo)

Nail Art for Nubs: Patchwork Elf Costumes

Christmas nail art just wouldn't have happened if I didn't manage to use China Glaze Running in Circles in some way, the gorgeous glittery green is one I may not have worn since about April, but as soon as I put on in on I asked myself why I hadn't - story of a polish addict's life?  Probably.

I was recently browsing on Pinterest and saw a Nailasaurus patchwork mani for Halloween and decided to take the idea and apply it to Christmas colours, the cliche'd red, gold and green.  For some reason once I had done these I was thinking about Dudley Moore in the 80s film Santa Claus.

This is my first attempt at a patchwork mani and until I put the stitching on I thought it looked awful, but those few lines really pulled it all together!

Pictures below are with a coat of HK Girl.

a-england Dancing with Nureyev

The new a-england collection had to be released at the time I am on an unofficial no buy.  Being holographic, of course I wanted them all (must.. buy... all.... the... holos!!!) Fortunately for me, my birthday is in December and this little beauty came my way.  Who know maybe some more could come my way over Christmas (hint, hint)

Dancing with Nureyev is a  soft blue, almost coming out a stonewash blue on the nails.  In some lights there was a hint of lavender.  Unusual and lovely.  The holo is hiding somewhat on the lightbox pictures below, but you can definitely see it's there.

Textured Wintery Skittlette

**Polishes used were press samples**

The wintery skittlette I have today contains the most subtle dots I have ever done.  I used a couple of polishes for this mani, they were a base of Barry M Blue Moon on my index and middle fingers, Matt White on my ring and little fingers and my thumb had Vanilla.  I used striping tape and Lady from the Royal Glitters to create the pattern on my index and middle fingers.  On my ring and little fingers I dotted with Lady, this is verrrrrry subtle over the white base.  For my thumb I added a frame of silver glequins.

Rainbow Holographic Dotticure

I really wanted to try a holo rainbow dotticure after I did the rainbow dotticure in Ab Fab week.

I used eleven polishes in this dotticure, I will list them all at the end.  Pictures below are one coat of black over Duri Rejuvacote, dots then top coat with HK Girl.

Bauble Inspired Textured Dotticure.

My plans for this post were originally just to swatch the Rimmel Space Dust polishes I have, but I figured I would go with a bauble inspired textured dotticure.  I was thinking about the baubles where the gritty glitter is raised up on a smooth shiny bauble.

My base was two coats of Barry M Matt White over Duri Rejuvacote. I topped the Matt White with Glisten and Glow HK Girl, then dotted with my Rimmel Space Dust polishes.

Wintery Saran Snowflakes

Press samples.

Today's attempt at wintery nail art is something of a nail fail.  I had intended this to be a wintery snowflake picture.  In reality they came out marbled and although I liked the overall look, it's not what I had intended.

My base was two coats Barry M Blue Moon. This was topped with a coat of HK Girl topcoat,  After this I painted on one coat of Barry M Matt White, then dabbed at it with cling film.  After this I used a silver nail art pen to draw snowflakes on.  The snowflakes were not very visible, I think the silver pen would stand out more over a darker colour, but I do love Blue Moon!!

Quirk Peace is Free and Boom Boom

Quirk are a brand set up by Kerrie from PishPoshandPolish as soon as I saw her swatches (click the link) I knew I had to have Peace is Free and Boom Boom, although it took me a while to pick them up.  I purchased these at the end of October, it has just taken a while to get around to swatching them.

Firstly today I have Peace is Free, a mix of blue and purple glitters.  The pictures below are one coat of Peace is Free dabbed over two coats of Barry M Greenberry.  I chose Greenberry as my base as I remember Kerrie swatching her top ten Barry M polishes and that one being in there.  No top coat on the pictures below.

Alternative Christmas Tree tutorial

Press sample - the polishes in this post were provided by Beauty UK for review purposes.

After yesterday's guest post at the Crumpet featuring the nails (below) and my first attempt at a tutorail, I decided to do another tutorial.

Guest post over at the Crumpet

Today I have a guest post over at The Crumpet, head on over to see it in it's full glory.  I also have a tutorial planned for the nails below, be sure to check back soon!

Penguin Nail Art

**Press samples**  The polishes used were provided by Beauty UK.

This penguin nail art is pretty simple it's just a couple of shapes combined, the white base, the black top part then the hat.  Add a few dots for eyes, beak and feet and it's done.

Snowman tutorial.

**Press samples**  The polishes used were provided by Beauty UK.

I think in the last 18 months of blogging, this must be my first attempt at a tutorial!  I've opted to do step by step pictures with a few words.

First up the finished look!

Santa Nail Art

**Press samples**  The polishes used were provided by Beauty UK.

Last year I saw Sincerely Stephanie had done an awesome Santa mani - I believe she did a tutorial, but looking at the picture it was pretty easy to figure out how it was done.

I have done a Santa face on my ring finger and his legs on my thumb.  The other nails were presents, but I think if I was doing these again I may skip the presents and just wear glitter.

Sunday, 1 December 2013

**Press samples**  The polishes used were provided by Beauty UK.

As it's now December, is it time to start open season on Christmas nails?  Just in case, here are some reindeer nails!

I started off with a base of Glam Polish No 47 in white, the pictures below show how pure white it is, I love how shiny this polish is.

Last year I did reindeer nails by following a  tutorial from Claire of Nuthin But a Nail Thing.   I have pretty much recreated those nails, although this year I felt confident enough to not need to keep referring to my phone on her blog!

The reindeer were done with a combination of dotting tools and a striping brush and are pretty simple step by step.  I used Chestnut Brown to paint the body of each reindeer on, then added ears and antlers with my striping brush.  My dotting tools with more White, some Black and Gel FX Poppy Red finished off the overall look.  The pictures below are with an added layer of topcoat.

Beauty UK polishes offer great value and are good quality.  I find the wear time on them works well for me.  They offer up to date trends and looks, at great pocket money prices and are quite easily available via their own website or instore in Superdrug.

British Nail Bloggers get rubbed

I am a member of the British Nail Blogger group on Facebook, earlier this week I stumbled over a post in there about lip rubbing and was a bit confused.  Nada of Penguins Left Green Polish explained that it is when you find yourself rubbing your polished nails on your top lip. I don't do that, but then later that evening I found myself absent mindedly, thinking deeply and realised I was rubbing my thumb nail, polished side downwards in the middle of my bottom lip!  So I am a polished lip rubber!  Others said they rub nails against nails or simply just rub the polished side of the nail with another finger when in thought.  I actually do all of them....

A few of the girls in that group thought it may be fun to put together a list of our top five polishes we rub with!

At this point I would clearly like to state that rubbing your lips with a polished nail is not a hobby I would condone as rubbing your lips with polished nails could potentially lead to ingesting of chemicals or some random dermatitis which causes your lips to balloon and not be good for your health.  This post is intended to be a fun post about something we all realised we did without even knowing!

I haven't had time to reswatch so any pictures below will be older manis already shown.

5 - Rimmel Space Dust
Shown below is Moon Walking on my index finger.

The Rimmel Space Dust polishes are probably the roughest textured polishes I own, this means that whenever I wear one of the three shades I own, I find myself constantly aware of the texture and doing all three of the rub types I mentioned at the start!  Rimmel's rough texture makes it a great exfoliator for the lips, so add a little lip balm and buff away all the dry, dead skin cells leaving yourself with a plump, refreshed looking pout.

4 - Nails Inc Black Leather Noho.
Noho is used on my middle and thumb nails in the picture below

Noho was the very first of the textured polishes I ever used, it's subtle raised texture and almost plasticy finish made it and instant magnet to by bottom lip, I love the friction it generates when other nails rub against it, My finger pads are often found exploring the textured nature circling gently over it and sometimes it even excites me so much my tongue gets some action with it!

3 - Layla Soft Touch
Below is Marshmallow Twinkle, a very old photo...

Layla Soft Touch polishes are somewhere between matte and velvet in their finishes, I have three of them in silver, lilac and neon pink.  They dry quickly and are pretty hard wearing.  The texture of these is ideal for an absent minded rubbing session, not too rough to cause any damage.

2 - Barry M Matte Nail Paints
All polishes shown below are the Matte Nail Paints, Caramel isn't included.

With names likc Mocha, Espresso and Caramel the Matte Nail Paint range sounds like it should be eaten!  I find myself exploring it constantly when I wear it, be it a rub on the lip, nail against nail or fingerpad on nail.  Very smooth and velvety, they are the Galaxy chocolate bar of a lip rubber's polish stash!

1 - Glisten & Glow HK Girl
Shown below over a mani posted earlier this week

My number one and most used polish for this type of activity is always going to be my top coat as I don't always wear a textured or matte polish.  I do wear polish daily and in most cases with top coat on it, so this wonderfully smooth, glossy, quick dry top coat is my most used and number one polish for this activity.

A little serious note after the frivolity...

I have been rubbing my lips a lot of late, whilst deep in thought.  Over the last six weeks or so my blog has been a little neglected by me, I have allowed posts to auto publish on a schedule and approved comments without replying to them.  I've been a bit down and introverted and not bothered to do anything much...  I've been like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.  I think it all started when I hurt my shoulder and then needed time off work and I couldn't really do anything (not least my nails) and I simply fell out of the swing of things with life in general.

As things are now, my shoulder is finally fixed up (still a little sore from time to time but no longer needing buckets of painkillers just to get out of bed) I've returned to work and I'm fighting back from this little grey and gloomy cloud.

I hope to have some time this weekend to catch up on the Ab Fab challenge, I'm not even going to attempt to catch up on the 33dc as that's almost over now and I didn't get a third of the way into that.  Next week is December so there are one or two (cough five) Christmas mani's I have done already but sat on until December and now is time to kick myself up the bum and get back into things.  Thanks to all my lovely family and fab polish buddies who've been trying to lift my spirits and cheer me up whilst I've been a bit gloomy!

Back to frivolity, innuendo and lip rubbing - the lip rubbing collaborative can be found here, be sure to check out the other British Nail Bloggers choices for rubbing.

Nail Mail and a bit of kitty spam.

Here's a couple of phone pictures of some nail mail I got recently. I didn't have chance to set up the light box or take any "proper" photos.

Firstly some Mentality polishes from Sally Magpies, Sailor and Hero and both matte polishes, Hard Candy and Distinct are both fab holos, I foresee some comparisons being made with these two holo polishes and some others in my stash to see if there are any dupes.

This little treasure was an eBay purchase.  I was outbid on Rumple's Wiggins, I was hoping to build my Shrek polishes!  I must say that this blue along with Shrek itself are probably both duped by China Glaze's I already have.  I haven't actually got the Shrek or Fiona colours, so now I have half of the Shrek collection!

Finally here a bit of Kitty spam!

He'd been a bit grumpy and tried to bite me so I got my revenge by putting his toy between his legs whilst he was sleeping so it looked like he was cuddling it and snapping this picture! He's normally so good natured but not on this day!

He loves being snug, he cuddled up to me and was so happy with this fleece blanket.

SpaRitual Flamenco and Jazz

***Press sample***

Today I have two polishes from the SpaRitual Dance collection to share.  I had hoped to share these sooner but had a few issues uploading the photos.

The Dance collection is a seasonal range of textured, shimmering finish polishes.  As soon as I saw these in the bottle I was wowed!

SpaRitual nail polishes are ones I always enjoy using, I love the bottles (recycled glass, designed by Ferrari, ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing) the brushes are great (rubberised handles, great control and good size) the polishes are quick drying and hard wearing and the formulations are free from nasty stuff and Vegan society approved.

Onto the swatches... extreme nubbiny nails ahead, when I went away at the end of October I picked my polish off twice, my nails are now making me pay by breaking and needing some TLC.

First up is Flamenco, a pink textured polish with a blooming gorgeous gold glitter spun through it.  Two coats, no top coat apart from final picture when I added a layer of HK Girl Top Coat.  So much sparkle the camera went crazy!!!

After one coat of HK Girl it wasn't totally smooth, but I wore it this way for the next 24hrs, it wore fine, no chipping or damage.  Removal was a little harder than a normal polish but no where near as tough as a glitter, to give you an idea I normally can remove polish from all 10 nails using two cotton wool pads, Flamenco with top coat needed three to do both hands.  I loved the gold shimmer.

Next I have Jazz, a black textured polish with silver glitters.  I used two coats below on all nails apart from my index, I smudged that and added a 3rd layer to smooth out but this didn't seem to dry textured for me (I have had this same problem using Kiko Sugar Mattes, I suspect it's more a fault of the heavy handed oaf applying it than the polish itself...)  The final picture is with top coat.

When I applied my first coat of Jazz I was a little sceptical if it would really go on in two coats, but it did and it was perfect.  The brush control means there was very little clean up needed.  As with Flamenco, removal was not much tougher than a normal glitter free polish.

I will try to get a comparison of Jazz and Kiko 646 done at some point, I think the textured effect is as strong in Jazz, but without being quite as rough as the Kiko.  If memory serves me correctly I wasn't a big fan of the Kiko due to the thick formulation and the brush splaying as it goes in the bottle.  The SpaRitual textures aren't as pronouncedly rough as the Rimmel SpaceDust polishes I recently tried out which is a tremendous win for me, I struggle after I use the Rimmel as they are almost like having emery boards strapped on your fingers and rub against things and my instincts are to reach for the acetone and take it off.

The Dance collection has a total of six colours, be sure to go and see Claire at Kerruticle's swatches of Cha Cha Cha as they look amazing, it's another gorgeous colour!

SpaRitual.co.uk are the UK distributors of these polishes and you can click through to their website.  For all other countries you can visit Sparitual.com for more information on where to purchase.

Polishes were provided for an unbiased review.
