R&R lacquers The New Black swatches and review

Today I have swatches of polishes from a new UK Indie brand R&R Lacquers.  R&R are two of my fellow British Nail Bloggers and their first collection "The New Black" is released today.

The New Black is a collection of five glitter toppers designed to be worn over black or dark polishes.

I have been lucky enough to have been sent three of these to review.   All pictures below are one coat of base colour then one coat of R&R and are shown without topcoat.

First is Elegant, when I unwrapped the polishes I have to admit this was the first one I was drawn to, it's my favourite type of blues with iridescent shimmer.

GOT Polish Dots

Today's Golden Oldie theme is dots.

This should be comfortable ground for me (as my banner shows, I like dots!) However I'm not so sure on today's post....

Dotticure that almost didn't make it

Today I have a dotticure which almost didn't make the blog, I actually shared these on my Facebook page as I doubted I would post them.  The pictures were taken on my phone and the white balance was off because it was taken in the kitchen one evening which can't figure out quite which white balance to use.  Luckily I managed to find a way to adjust them and "cool" them down, although my fingers still look quite red.

tri-polish tuesday

Today is the final Tri-Polish Tuesday with the colour theme red, orange and yellow.  I have used all three colours again (that's all three used every time this month, check me out!) This week I am using Barry M polishes in Blood Orange (red), Mango and Lemon Ice Cream.  I also added white OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls and used a black striper to create this look.

Magpie Monday - Mentality Divergent

For today's Magpie Monday I have the final swatch pictures from my drafts which suit my Magpie Monday theme (I had flu during the last fortnight and I had very little will to do my nails.)

Sally Magpies is my favourite "go to" store for indies and one of my most favourite of brands stocked are Mentality.  I haven't really swatched any Mentality polishes alone, but today's polish is a beautiful deep inky blue holo and has to be seen alone.

The following pictures are two coats, no top coat.

a-england part two - Her Rose Adagio and Dancing with Nureyev

Today I have the two other Ballerinas following on from my last post showing Fonteyn and Encore Margot.

All two coats, no top coat.

First Her Rose Adagio, a fantastic soft pink holo.  I think the camera had a problem capturing the pink on the nail, but in the first picture the bottle shows the pink best.

Models Own / Dogs Trust Giveaway Winners!

Giveaway winners have been picked!  I loved reading the answers to the just for fun questions for the names of pet dogs, I wish I had been able to pick a winner based on those, but rafflecopter has randomly picked the winners. They have been emailed and I am awaiting replies :)

a-england Ballerina Collection part one Encore Margot and Fonteyn

Today I'm posting two of the a-england Ballerina collection, I've broken these into two posts as there are quite a few pictures of these, six per polish, four polishes in the collection = too many to put in one post!  I got these in December as birthday and Christmas presents.

All pictures are two coats, no top coat.

First is Encore Margot.

Blurple Holo Duochrome comparison

When I wore Girly Bits Belly Jeans I was reminded if how many similar polishes I have. I put together a comparison of four and totally forgot to include Belly Jeans. I don't think any of these match Belly Jeans in terms of the colours it switches to though.

The polishes I used were Ozotic 533 (discontinued) Iconic Effect Northern Lights, Enchanted Polish Across the Universe (I am pretty sure this was discontinued, but I haven't really bothered following EP for around two years) and Iconic Effect Astral Plane. Each polish is shown below in two coats over one coat of a-england Camelot.  No top coat.

GOT polish - Blue

Today's golden oldie challenge is a bit of a cheat, the polish I'm mainly featuring isn't an old one, it's fairly recent and was untried, but I did a comparison and had the draft ready and the polishes I compared with are Golden Oldies (been ill with flu and not managed to do a special post for today.

Cirque Bejewelled, two coats, no top coat.

Manglaze Cabron

Today's post is some simple swatches of Manglaze Cabron. I have been ill with a flu like bug so the next few days will be vault swatch and comparison posts, rather than nail art.

Two coats over Duri, no top coat.

Tri Polish Tuesday

Today is Tri-Polish Tuesday, the third this month with colours red, orange and yellow.

Today's is my favourite of the month so far.  I would like to give credit to the person who created this look, but given the place I saw it done was by a certain V-Logger on You Tube who has been the centre of much attention for NOT giving credit, I have no idea who originally came up with this!  If you do know please feel free to comment and tell me.

Magpie Monday

Time for another Magpie Monday, although reading back through most of last week, it's been Magpie mania!

The founder of Sally Magpies is Sally, a British Nail Blogger who had her own blog NailPron and took a leap into running an online store during 2012.  The polishes stocked are indies and international brands we may not be otherwise able to get our hands on in the UK.  I love spending virtual (and real) money in her store!

Apologies for the picture quality, I'm not sure what the hell's gone on with these, but for some reason the pictures seem to have lost their clarity during the upload process.

Today I have a simple mani, featuring a Catrice (discontinued in the store, but still a few in the sale section) The Pinky and The Brain - a fab hot pink - stamped using a Pueen plate and Mentality Rigoberta.  Rigoberta is a golden green polish but over pink it's looking more gold.

Layla Fire it Up and Pretty Serious Bloody Bride swatches

Today I have more recent purchases from Sally Magpies to share.

First is Layla Fire it Up.  Fire it Up is part of the soft touch range, I have five of this range now and sadly I think Sally will no longer be selling them (although to be fair, she has got ManGlaze and all the amazing holos so she probably needs the storage space!) The soft touch polishes are all matte finishes: some have shimmer and some are creme, today's soft touch is a creme.

The following pictures are ONE COAT!!  No top coat.

Mentality Top Coats.

I love Mentality polishes, I got my first one Mae a few months ago and now have just one or two more ;)  Today I thought I would share a few of the toppers I have purchased.

I started out with a base of an indigo creme polish, Rimmel Barmy Blue then added the different toppers.  Apologies in advance for the red patch on my index finger, in some lights it looked worse than others, I have no idea how it happened, I suspect it was a burn.

Giveaway reminder

Don't forget there is still a week to enter the Models Own / Dogs Trust giveaway!  I have generously been sent five of these polishes to give away to blog readers!  I have to stress that this is UK only due to mailing restrictions.

If you want to see swatches of the polish you can view the original post here.

Manglaze Lesbi-honest

Today is another Manglaze swatch, I could have posted them altogether but thought it would become picture heavy if I did.

Lesbi-honest is a deep raspberry pink with a matte finish, the matte isn't totally flat as there are little shimmers in there.  The polish, like the other two I have swatched, applies with great coverage in one coat, perfect in two.  I still need to fully master the idea of thin coats being better than thick ones as the bottom of my ring finger shows!

Pictures below are two coats, no base or top coat used.

I tried to get more bottle shots but they came out a bit blurry.

Golden Oldie Thursday - Stripes with Girly Bits Street Magic.

Today's GOT Polish has given me the excuse I needed to reswatch a polish I haven't worn for ages, Girly Bits Street Magic.  I have done some stripes too, I'll tag the swatches on at the end of the post.

My base colour was a-england  Camelot (one coat) with two coats of Street Magic,  I matted street magic then used a black striper to freehand the stripes.  I didn't use any tape as intended because I was evicted from my seat by the cat who jumped in whilst I got the Street Magic pictures, a striper was easier to use whilst standing (I didn't pick him up and shift him, he had the unfair advantage of fur whilst I had wet nails and that white fur of his sticks like a bugger...)

Street Magic, when layered over black, shifts from orange to green, in the main it rests on orange on me, yet as soon as I put my hands in front of the camera out pops the green.  I didn't have a bowl on hand to dunk my hands in and see if I could capture the orange hue.

Jere's Street Magic alone, first pictures are two coats over black, no top coat.

And the same with Mentality matte top coat.

Apologies for wonky thumb, I had a vertical break on the tip and had to file it out :(

Here's the rest of the GOT participants.

Manglaze F-Off and Dye

Today I have swatches of Manglaze Fuck Off and Dye, a strawberry pink matte polish with shimmer.   I picked this up along with Ilf as part of my lemming slaying mission from Sally Magpies.

This polish applied like a dream, as with Ilf, it went on well in one coat and perfect in two, the brushes are great with these polishes and I found I needed very minimal clean up.

I love the labels on these bottles, they feel like real works of art!

Tri-Polish Tuesday week 2

Today is part two of the red, orange and yellow tri-polish challenge for January.  This time I have done stripes, I think they were in my head as the GOT Polish for this week is stripes also!

I used the same polishes as last week, even though I could have changed if I so wished.  I used a-england Perceval, OPI A Roll in the Hague and Beauty UK Yellow Peril, plus taking advantage of the rules I used a white base, a silver striper and a black striper.

I used one coat of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, striped then top coated with Mentality Matte top coat.

Magpie Monday: the lemming slayed!

Last week I launched Magpie Monday's celebrating the store Sally Magpies.  Today's Magpie Monday is a simple swatch post featuring a polish I had been wanting for over two years but never been able to get my hands on, Manglaze Ilf.  Sally the lemmin slayer sorted that out for me!

I first saw Ilf on Samariums Swatches and TraceFacePhiles in 2011, the seafoam matte polish with shimmer fell into my most desired polish almost immediately.  I looked online and found that - at that time - the Manglaze polishes were not shipped to the UK.  I even emailed them to ask if there was anyway I could purchase this polish and was told not.  I forgot about it and gave up hope of finding it, so imagine my delight when I saw the Facebook update by Sally Magpies saying that Manglaze were coming....  I missed them going live but about an hour later I managed to get Ilf, even hubby knew what Ilf was as I had been going on about it so much!

Onto the swatches... I love the bottle label so tried to get it from all angles!

OPI No Room for the Blues and Pretty Serious Rae's Rainbow

On New Years Eve I saw that Cynthia from Of Life and Lacquer had posted OPI No Room for the Blues.  Loving blue polishes I found myself on eBay looking for it but thought the results a little overpriced.  Later that day someone mentioned TNBL in a group on Facebook - a site I hadn't heard of, The Nail and Beauty Link so I had a look and saw the prices without VAT were pretty good, add VAT and it was reasonable so I bought this!  I love this blue.  I am not sure how it compares to some of the other shades I have of cerulean blues, I do have one or two...

This is two coats, no top coat.

New Year Nails

I've been meaning to publish these for days... These were my intended New Year Nails.  I say intended as the ring finger had chipped before New Years Eve day had passed and I ended up going out with (gasp) naked nails!

Dogs Trust team up with Models Own / Giveaway

***press sample***

Dogs Trust, the nation’s largest dog welfare charity, has teamed up with Models Own to create a limited edition nail varnish, designed to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their famous slogan ‘A Dog is for Life...not just for Christmas®’ even now, some 35 years on this is still a big issue when the soft, cute puppy grows up into a boisterous dog, demanding more time than people often have to give.

I have been sent this gold shade for review, the  profits from each bottle sold will be going to Dog's Trust.  The charity care for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year.  They have a campaign at the moment on twitter #presspaws where they asked dog lovers to share photos of their own pets and ask people to pause to think can I really take the responsibility for a dog?  Can I  provide all the attention and care it will need?

Personally I know I can't: as much as both hubby and I would love a dog neither of us would be around often enough to give a dog the amount of attention and exercise it would need.  When I was young my parents had a collie which required a lot of walking and exercise, even though she was taken out regularly and my mum was home with her, she would become bored and chew.  Eventually they rehomed her with a family on a farm and she took on a more "working dog" role and was very happy.  Interestingly, when I looked at the website for the nearest Dogs Trust site to me, which I believe is Kenilworth, many of the breeds looking for new homes were also dogs which require a lot of exercise, breeds whose nature is to be a working dog or a hunting dog, terriers and springer spaniels along with collies.

Onto the golden polish: 25 Carat Gold is an intense golden shade.  It applied really well, I used two coats although I could have got away with one.  I haven't tried this polish for stamping, although I do think it has potential to be a great stamper.

Pictures below are two coats, no top coat.  Their are slight bubbles from my base coat, I hurriedly applied a base as I was worried about staining with this being a strong colour

Golden Oldie Thursday / GOT polish challenge

Today is the first of a series of Crumpet Nail Tart challenges to revisit Golden Oldie Polishes, ones we have had in our stash and not used for a year or if no polish meets that criteria the oldest untried or used polish.

Today the theme is pink.  I checked a few labels and realised OPI Past, Present and Fuchsia hasn't been on my blog since a very early post in July 2012.   I used this with an untried pink, Manglaze Fuck Off and Dye to create a ruffian and decided to give it a feeling of being full of holes with polka dots using Past, Present and Fuchsia over the top.  I haven't tried a ruffian before, it's a bit rough (groan....) but not bad for a first attempt.

Burt's Bees Tips and Toes Kit

Today I wanted to post a quick review of a kit I  purchased one in November and have been using since.  I also was given a set for Christmas and have got these as my spares, ready to use!

Winterberry Nail Art Kit

This is a relatively picture free post with a review of the Winterberry Nail Art kit I purchased in December.  I had intended to post my new year nails today, but saw on Facebook yesterday that these sets are half price and being removed from the shop on Friday as the owner, Rachel can't store them in her accommodation.

Tri-Polish Tuesday

I'm a member of the Crumpets Nail Tarts group on Facebook and have kind of forgotten about the TriPolish Challenge in the latter part of last year because it used to be the last two weeks of the month on a Tuesday and Thursday, with the dates moving it would slip my mind.  This year it has changed a little, now it is just a Tuesday and through out a month plus you don't have to stick to the same polishes throughout.

January's Tri-Polish colours are red, orange and yellow so today's red is a-england Perceval, the orange is OPI A Roll in the Hague and the yellow is Beauty UK Yellow Peril.

I adopted a mani I saw Debbie Crumpet do last year, Debbie did hers using Nails Inc teals with cream dots.  I remember reading the blogpost when we were travelling up to Ikea.  Funny the trivia you remember!

The first pictures are with HK Girl and lots of light reflection.  The yellow on my skin wasn't visible to the eye, I have cleaned up yet when I came to watermark and upload the pictures there it was yellow cuticles? WTF?!?!

Magpie Monday

I was meant to post about my new year's eve nails yesterday, but after a busy weekend of picking furniture and paint and rearranging our front room I totally forgot !

Today is the start of a series of Magpie Monday posts in celebration of Sally Magpies store.  Sally Magpies store was set up over a year ago by fellow British Nail Blogger Sally, bringing great indie brands and hard to get hold of international brands to us UK girls.  I often find myself on her website drooling over the Mentality polishes.  I was really excited to see that Manglaze polishes were coming to her store and pounced within an hour of launch!  She also has Zoya on there now too :)

My first tea bag repairs

Recently I found my index fingernail was broken almost halfway across and it was on a day when I was at home so I thought I would make an attempt at repairing it using a tea bag.  I took a few pictures on my phone as I went, by some miracle I didn't end up glued to my phone although I did have the tweezers stuck on my left hand at one point....

The first one is a picture of the damage

Baaaaaad Pictures of In Pink We Trust with SOTT

Today's post is some photos I took of an incredibly bright pink a couple of weeks ago.  These photos almost never made it to a post, but this is the last of the drafts cleared...

Lilypad Lacquer have made two customs for us UK girls, the first one I have already shown was Drool Britannia, a red, white and blue glitter made specially for us British Nail Bloggers and In Pink We Trust which is a store exclusive for Sally Magpies although I think it has been retired so grab it quick before it's gone. This pink is one I have worn a couple of times but never made it to the blog for some reason.  The pictures below are showing it topped with Essie Shine of the Times and they were taken after I had been wearing this for around 15hrs, during which time I had put the Christmas Tree up.

In Pink we Trust is a hot pink, flakie flecked polish.  SOTT added has pulled some extra orange hues.  Photos are with top coat of HK Girl and were taken in outdoor lighting on a dull December day using the camera in "auto" as the brightness of the pink messed with my manual settings!

Girly Bits Belly Jeans

Today's post is my swatches of Belly Jeans is a holo multi chrome polish, the bottle shot below shows the movement is has from gold through to purple.  On the nail blue to purple was the most prominent shift I saw.  The first photo was one I shared already on my IG account and I was so chuffed when I saw it reposted to the Girly Bits IG page!!

This was two coats, no top coat.

Ask A British Nail Blogger: Base and Topcoats

Today's post is an "Ask a British Nail Blogger" post about our favourite base and top coats. It was something I suggested on our Facebook wall and seemed to be welcomed as an idea.  I love reading this type of post because I am a nosey bugger and it always interests me to see what works for others.

First up are base coats.

My 2013 Review

Happy New Year!!!

Time for my round up of 2013 - I followed the same style of points that I used for my 2012 favourites.
